# About Us


8gears Container Registry is the leading Harbor-based container registry,
built and operated by core maintainers and contributors of the CNCF Harbor
project.
Our deep expertise and commitment to the open-source community have earned the
trust of leading enterprises, cloud providers, and public sector organizations.
Who rely on our expertise to manage and support their most critical core services.

## Our Story

As early adopters of cloud-native technologies, we faced a recurring
challenge: finding a container registry that met the demands of enterprises.
In 2013, Docker Hub was the primary option, but it lacked the
essential features cloud-native teams needed.

We joined Project Portus, an upcoming open-source container registry designed for
organizations. Recognizing its potential, we became active contributors,
expanding its capabilities to meet customers' needs. This hands-on
experience led us to launch our own Container Registry as a Service (SaaS) in
2016, alongside our cloud-native consulting business.
By 2020, our user base had grown significantly, and we knew we needed a more
robust foundation. To better meet the evolving demands of our customers, we
migrated our software stack to Harbor, a powerful, CNCF-graduated open-source registry.

Our active involvement as Harbor maintainers and contributors
solidified our expertise, and container registries have since become our
primary business focus.
Today, we are pioneers in the container registry space, driven by our
first-hand experience and a commitment to solving real-world challenges for
enterprises and innovators.
